Joining band is a great decision that creates awesome experiences for your child as they enter fifth grade. Band is a place to make friends, learn new skills, and enrich academic experiences. Below is information about joining band that will be helpful to you and your child.
How do I get an instrument?
Our families acquire instruments in one of three ways:
- Schmitt Music “Better than Rent” program. This is the most popular option because of the flexibility and top service it provides. Families have a choice of different instruments and the option for a maintenance package. Sign up at schmittmusic.com or come to the Band Sign-Up Night.
- Buy an instrument independently and have it evaluated at the school. Some families already have instruments available for use. If you select this option, your instrument will need to be evaluated by a music store, and you will need to make sure you have all the necessary accessories to go along with the instrument.
- Use a school Instrument (limited selection available). This option is for families who may not be able to afford a new instrument or are using a “big” instrument (tuba, baritone, sometimes French horn). If you select this option, please contact Mrs. Sunderland for details, and she can get you all the necessary information.
What is the time commitment like?
Most students find that an hour per week of practice time is enough to be prepared for band class. In 5th grade, students have full band class three times a week, and each student receives a ten-minute lesson with Mrs. Sunderland once per week.
